This position is for a Chemical and Materials Engineering professional with knowledge and technical expertise in metallurgy, plating and heat treatment. The role involves metallurgical studies, failure analysis, root cause and corrective action, and overseeing and directing plating, heat treating and special processes such as welding.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • The position involves working in the Materials and Processes Lab as the lead for Metallurgical Analysis, Plating, Chemical Cleaning, Heat Treating and Special Processes.

  • Analytical techniques such as wet chemistry, micro-sectioning, microstructural identification, SEM/EDS, XRF, Xray, tensile and compression testing, digital imaging microscopy, and micro-hardness will be used for determine the root cause of failures or to implement material or process changes internally or by suppliers.

  • Material or supplier obsolescence is not uncommon and involves working on process variables with engineering, quality and operations to validate new suppliers or improve process variables.

  • Materials and Processes is a service group, and a Center of Excellence for United Technologies Aerospace Systems and as such requires interaction with the various internal customers, other United Technologies facilities (for whom we regularly perform failure analyses), customers and suppliers.

  • In addition to M&P responsibilities the candidate would be the Engineering Lead for the plating and heat treat departments at the site.

  • Summary reports, test results and conclusions for root cause analyses are commonly written following failure analysis, material or process changes.

  • Follow through with implementation of corrective actions, and proof of process.

  • Metallurgical support of first article inspections for new materials and processes is required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 7 years of relevant experience OR

  • Advance degree and 5 years of relevant experience OR

  • In absence of a degree, 11 years of relevant experience is required

  • Must be a U.S. Person/Permanent Resident “Green Card” holder

  • The applicant must have metallurgical knowledge with experience in plating, heat treatment of metals, metal cleaning, and some knowledge of special processes such as welding, precision cleaning, degreasing and soldering.

  • Experience in failure analysis and root cause / corrective action is a primary requirement.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy/Material Science with hands-on experience in failure analysis and running a plating and heat-treating facility would be ideal.
