The Collins Aerospace Applied Research & Technology organisation seeks an experienced candidate with strong R&D credentials for a senior level position as Discipline Leader, Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation. In this role, the successful candidate will manage an international team with the mission to advance research and technology development across the areas of complex systems engineering including AI-based approaches, optimization, collaborative distributed design, heterogenous system decomposition, modeling and analysis, and advanced computational technologies to meet the current and future needs of our company in the aerospace systems sector.

Primary Responsibilities:

Capability and technology development: the Discipline Leader will develop a strategic vision for the capabilities under her/his responsibility including identifying long-term strategic technology investments and roadmaps in Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation, staff technical hiring and development, and establishing partnerships with world class academic institutions to support the defined vision.

Customer relationship and engagement: the Discipline Leader is responsible for developing a trusted and collaborative relationship with internal and external customers in the area of Multidisciplinary Design Optimisation, and for ensuring timely delivery of new technologies, establishing a personal relationship with customer key contact points, and being a valued resource as our customers are developing their own roadmaps and strategies.

Staff competency development: the Discipline Leader is responsible for identifying competency gaps and developing the necessary development plans to ensure the group can sustain and grow critical skills. The Discipline Leader will have the responsibility for annual performance reviews, individual development planning, career planning, technical mentoring, and ensuring high quality technical activities within her/his team.

Manage resource allocation: the Discipline Leader will engage on a frequent basis with the PMO office, with individual project owners, peers, and senior management on the execution of technical work within her/his discipline to ensure high technical quality work and effective allocation of staff.

Operations: the Discipline Leader is responsible for hiring, and will manage the group to achieve financial targets, develop an annual capital plan, and ensure thorough implementation of environmental health and safety policies in offices and laboratories.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A proven applied or academic research track record in one or more of the following sub-discipline areas: systems engineering, optimization, modeling and analysis, system decomposition, uncertainty quantification, or artificial intelligence applied to complex systems engineering

  • A PhD or Masters degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, or Mathematics with a 5+ years of industrial or academic experience

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • A track record in building technical capability through hiring and technical mentoring of staff

  • A track record in establishing and managing collaborative projects and partnerships, including with academic institutions

  • Demonstrable experience of technical leadership, including examples of turning ambition and vision into reality.

  • Experience in building consensus to achieve desired goals within schedule and budget constraints.

  • Excellent communication skills across a broad range of stakeholders.

  • Strong track record of intellectual property and patent creation.

  • Experience with aerospace product and system technologies.
