Position Summary

Raytheon Technologies Research Center is looking for a highly motivated and experienced individual for the position of Mechanical Design Engineer in Design and Prototyping group, to support projects requiring concept generation, execution of detailed design and managing fabrication of prototype hardware and test rigs on time and budget. The hardware and test rigs are often unique designs requiring knowledge of structural and thermal analysis, material selection, manufacturing processes and geometrical tolerances.

This individual will participate in project meetings, collect design requirements, assist in concept development, advise the project team on design options and limitations, provide the project leadership with updates, support project meetings and design reviews, support brain storming sessions and proposals.

Qualifications & Competencies

The preferred candidate should be self-motivated, have a strong background and understanding of mechanical design and an understanding of fundamental engineering principles. She/he must be able to work effectively in project-team environment with minimum supervision, focused on innovation and have strong verbal and written communication skills. Additional relevant skills include:

  • working on multiple projects simultaneously

  • conducting design reviews and providing periodic updates

  • working on site or remotely with minimum supervision

  • interacting with multi discipline project leaders

  • conducting design requirements

  • design coordination with the other team members and manufacturing

  • complex solid and surface CAD modeling (SolidWorks, NX)

  • engineering drawing generation (including GD&T)

  • preparing and supporting design reviews

  • interacting with the prototyping shop to fabricate parts meeting requirements

  • US person status (secret clearance is a plus)

    Knowledge of:

  • high speed rotating components / turbomachinery

  • design and knowledge of materials to meet high temperature and pressure conditions

  • material selection

  • structural and thermal analysis (classical methods and FEA)

  • design for fabrication

    Preferred but not required

  • active security clearance

  • electromagnetic machine design

  • rig instrumentation

    Education & Experience

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering with at least 8 years of experience, or an Advanced degree with at least 5 years experience, in design of complex mechanical components.

  • Familiarity with aerospace design and certification processes.

    Work Authorization: US Citizen or Permanent Resident Required

    Location: East Hartford, CT - Relocation assistance offered.
