The technician works directly with the engineer to develop an analysis plan for a job. The analyses of interest are optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray Computed Tomography, and X-ray Diffraction. In those cases, the plan will identify how features of interest will be measured and quantified using the necessary analysis methods.
The technician will execute the plan through sample preparation (using cut-off saws, sample mounting media, polishing, and chemical etching methods); microscopic evaluation; and using x-ray equipment to determine and quantify material characteristics.
After preliminary evaluation, the technician will perform post-processing of the data (which are often 2D images, spectrums, and 3D data sets) to quantify material features and characteristics of interest. The use of sophisticated computer software is required to perform post-processing.
The technician will then report out to the engineer and customers via PowerPoint, outlining the work-scope, experimental approach, deliverables, results, and conclusions.
HS Diploma or AA/AS degree (or other 2-year post high school training)
4+ years of relevant experience as a Technician
US Citizenship due to program requirements
Exceptional interpersonal skills and consistent record of collaboration, flexibility, innovation and initiative
