The Engineering Excellence Hardware Discipline Lead works across RIS to a dd value to the business as a discipline leader by providing expertise in the practice, processes and tooling. The Hardware Discipline Lead interfaces with Common Engineering functions and the Product Line functions to modernize, transform, and streamline process and increase productivity while providing customer solutions that meet schedule and cost. Discipline Leads analyze, triage, and recommend solutions for new business initiatives with their primary focus being on execution throughout the lifecycle. The Hardware Discipline Lead approves program tailoring and generates, reviews, and approves engineering processes. The Hardware Discipline Lead serves as a shared resource for business initiatives interfacing with people in all positions and disciplines, and occasionally, for broader RTX initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Expeditious Leadership: Quickly get teams moving in the right direction to solve problems. Document and mentor others in best practices. Ability to identify organization and performance issues. Alert manager of human performance observations across the business.

  • Detailed Engineering Discipline(s) Knowledge: Broad understanding of entire life cycle, from acquisition through decommissioning. Sufficient depth to evaluate and guide programs to meet performance, cost and schedule. Maintain SME knowledge with continuous learning.

  • Clear Communication: Excellent written and spoken communication. Gracefully “wield the sword of truth.” Guide programs and people to systems engineering thinking and behaviors. Write clear and concise observations with actionable recommendations.

  • Solid Programmatics : Evaluate and provide programmatic recommendations based on EVMS and R&O best practices to meet customer performance, cost and schedule expectations. Escalate critical risks, opportunities and systemic issues to engineering leadership.

  • Critical Thinking: Analyze facts and data as a part of daily work. Ask pertinent questions to define and understand the problem. Consider technology and programmatics . Stay abreast of discipline specific industry standards, processes, and tooling. Be intellectually curious.

  • Rigorous Engineering: Use best practices from the broader SE, SW, HW, or WLE disciplines. Champion the appropriate breadth and depth of engineering rigor for a given program or activity. Pair Engineering Excellence technical staff to Engineering Excellence needs where applicable.

  • Active Knowledge Transfer: Actively mentor, coach or otherwise develop the next generation of experts. Provide constructive and actionable feedback to engineers with respect.

  • Responsive Flexibility: Support Engineering Excellence services across RI&S. Willing to take on new tasks to utilize our individual strong suits for the success of our team and business.

    Specific duties and expectations include:

  • Lead strategic initiatives across the business. Coordinate, implement, and socialize recommendations.

  • Lead efforts to solve systemic discipline issues across the business. Coordinate, implement, and socialize recommendations.

  • Assign Independent Reviewers for red, watch and leadership requested programs, in each specific discipline.

  • Participate in Independent Reviews for red, watch and leadership requested programs, in each specific discipline.

  • Recommend updates to discipline specific topics, criteria, and artifacts for independent review checklists.

  • Facilitate and approve, as applicable, transformation initiatives to modernize RI&S Engineering including metrics, tooling, people and process.

  • Pair subject matter experts with product lines that need temporary specialty skills

  • Facilitate knowledge transfer from DTD to DL as part of transitioning pursuit to program/Gate 4 to Gate 5.

  • Ensure Programs execute per process command media and escalate issues to leadership.

  • Execute forensics and provide programmatic recommendations based on EVMS and R&O best practices.

  • Provide constructive and actionable feedback to program leadership.

  • Chair meetings with the product line engineering executives and directorates, Common Engineering transformation and process teams, and other Common Engineering orgs to foster collaboration.

  • Chair discipline specific forums to advocate best practices and ongoing transformation activities.

  • Promote discipline knowledge and continued learning within the Product Lines

  • Mentor the next generation of discipline SMEs.

    Required Skills:

  • Minimum of 12 yrs experience in hardware engineering.

  • Extensive knowledge of hardware discipline practices, processes and metrics.

  • Extensive proven credentials in the relevant discipline practice for program execution

  • Demonstrated experience developing and presenting technical briefings to customer and Senior leaders

    Required Education:

    A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electronic Engineering or equivalent is required. An advanced degree (M.S. or PhD) or certificates are preferred.
