Raytheon Technologies Materials Scientist in Goleta, California

As a Scientist or Engineer involved in bulk growth of crystalline semiconductors you will focus on development and production of critical materials for Infrared Sensors at Raytheon Vision Systems, a provider of leading edge sensing technology. This role is located in Goleta, CA.

We are looking for an individual who must demonstrate a safety first work routine. A scientist/engineer who supports production goals and participates in the development of state-of-the-art, cost competitive, crystalline, and bulk CdZnTe materials for next generation advanced IR sensors. As part of a multi-functional team you will be involved quantifying critical growth parameters, and in the development of meaningful, trackable process metrics. This work may extend into growth modeling for variability analysis, subsequent scale-up with an end-goal of a demonstration of industry-leading large semiconductor substrates enabling subsequent epitaxial diode growth and high-definition IR sensors for space applications.

In depth knowledge of bulk crystalline growth mechanisms is essential. This includes utilization of materials characterization techniques or metrology that provide data to derive growth processes. You will assess process variability through advanced mathematical methods and statistical analysis, apply process controls to assure repeatability for transition into production.

Crystal growth and crystalline substrate fabrication requires to be able to work in a controlled, clean-room environment as well as a fundamental understanding of high temperature furnaces and vacuum equipment. You will work in a team environment that will require detailed communication to direct technicians and to interface with colleagues collaboratively. You will be participating in production meetings in addition to engineering projects. Understanding of production goals with associated urgency of schedule is equally important to research and development. In that role you will further engage collaboratively with internal and external customers involved in diode growths via Molecular Beam Epitaxy or Liquid Phase Epitaxy. It is encouraged to interface with industry networks and to maintain relationship with Universities to maintain a current, up-to-date understanding of state of the art.

Required Skills:

  • Minimum 6 years of professional engineering experience

  • Direct experience with semiconductor materials

  • Fundamental understanding of crystal growth processes

  • Direct experience with growth of crystalline materials

  • Understanding of epitaxial growth processes

  • Understanding of high temperature, vacuum, electrical, and mechanical systems

  • A motivated and self-starting individual who interacts well in a team environment that includes both company colleagues and customers

  • Understanding of common metrology techniques to quantify crystalline growth

  • Familiarity with environmentally controlled areas, cleanrooms, laboratories etc

  • Understanding of advanced mathematical methods for data analysis

  • Understanding of statistical methods and its relevance for process control

  • Basic understanding of common software tools for data manipulation and data extraction such as: Matlab, ProE, SQL

  • A motivated and self-starting individual who interacts well in a team environment that includes both company colleagues and customers

  • US Citizenship is required as this position will require the ability to obtain a DoD security clearance

Desired Skills:

  • Previous bulk Crystal growth experience

  • Familiarity with semiconductor physics

  • Experience with ISO compliance and WIP tracking systems

  • Experience in handling of fragile materials and delicate hardware.

Required Education (including Major):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering in Material Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related field

    Desired Education:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Material Science, Physics, Chemistry, or related field

This position requires either a U.S. Person or a Non-U.S. Person who is eligible to obtain any required Export Authorization.
