Raytheon Technologies Sr. Process Engineer in Goleta, California

Raytheon Vision Systems (RVS ) is searching for an experienced Process Engineer to become a member of the Technical Staff, supporting the design and manufacture of state-of-the art infrared systems. The Thin Films department at RVS creates coatings to support challenging Electro-Optical applications in the Space, Tactical, Airborne and Emerging markets. The ideal candidate will have familiarity with Vacuum System technologies and fundamental principles of Process Engineering. The candidate will work with the Technical Director and skilled technicians, to develop strategies and processes for advanced coating technologies, taking advantage of the in-house capabilities of 10+ vacuum coating systems. The candidate will work with Infrared Systems Engineers and other functions to determine strategies for incorporating coated windows, lenses, filters and detector antireflective coatings into Integrated Dewar Camera Assemblies and other optical systems. The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Reviewing specifications for optical coatings, including spectral performance requirements, environmental and chemical exposure requirements, durability and surface quality requirements

  • Modeling and designing coatings for manufacture in-house

  • Developing optical coatings strategies in conjunction with Product Engineers and Factory and Engineering management

  • Develop test protocols and seeking Quality approval in the characterization of flight grade hardware

  • Providing Process Ownership of one or more vacuum coating tools using e-beam Evaporation or Ion Beam Sputtering – including writing and certifying work instructions, creating control plans and defining defect reduction/yield improvement plans

  • Interfacing with Product Engineers and Program Management production of optical components

  • Developing requirements and qualification plans for Capital procurements

    The candidate should have technical proficiency in the manufacture of optical components or microelectronics using vacuum system processing as well as proficiency and comfort in interfacing with multiple functions including Product Engineering, Systems Engineering, Quality, Mechanical Design Engineering, Factory Management, Equipment Engineering and Process Engineering

    Required Skills:

  • 4+ years’ experience as a Process or Manufacturing Engineer in an Optics, Electro-Optics or Microelectronics environment

  • Familiarity with basic principles of vacuum system operations

  • Ability to understand and develop Engineer specifications, drawings and requirements

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to understanding chemical safety data and ability to follow safety protocols including the use of Personal Protective Equipment

  • Computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint as well as the ability to learn and use engineering and manufacturing software)

  • Ability to work in a cleanroom environment wearing coverall garments

  • Ability to obtain a US Government Secret clearance within one year of start date

    U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access US only data systems

    Desired Skills:

  • Direct experience with e-bean evaporation or ion beam sputtering technology

  • Familiarity with metrology equipment and characterization techniques used in Optical Coatings or microelectronics fabrication

  • Manufacturing experience in Aerospace, Defense or Microelectronics

  • Experience in design of Optical Coatings

  • Experience in Infrared Optical Coatings and materials

  • Experience with Optical Monitoring systems and software

  • Experience with Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Design of Experiments (DOE/ANOVA)

  • Equipment and controls systems design or experience

  • Visual Basic, G code, C+, Python, Matlab or other computer programming experience

  • Program and Project management experience

  • Experience with Infrared Detector or Systems Technology

  • Existing US Government Secret clearance

    Required Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum of 4 years of prior relevant experience required, or 2+ years with a Master’s Degree or a PhD
