The Collins Aerospace Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) Department in Melbourne Florida is seeking an outstanding Engineer to fill a Principal Systems Engineering position within its Traffic Surveillance Department.
The Traffic Surveillance Department supports, integrates, and develops multiple commercial avionics products for the Air Transport and Business & Regional aircraft markets. The Principal Systems Engineer will support sustaining engineering efforts for the currently fielded Configurable Integrated Surveillance System (CISS) product line. The Engineer will perform assignments requiring the use and application of systems engineering principles and techniques as well as hardware testing, integration and troubleshooting.
The Principal Engineer must have extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques used in systems development and qualification related to commercial avionics. The applicant must have strong technical capabilities and be significantly experienced in Systems Engineering principles and practices. The candidate must also be self-motivated, self-disciplined, demonstrate good communication and leadership skills and have the ability to work within multi-functional, multi-discipline teams. The candidate will be expected to work flexibly and coordinate effectively with multiple suppliers and customers to achieve department goals.

Primary Responsibilities:
Design, test, analyze, integrate, qualify and document systems of moderate to high complexity, such as systems with multiple sub-systems with multiple hardware components or mixed electrical technologies and software programs.
Lead systems engineering requirements capture, analysis, and allocation.
Decomposes customer specifications and system level requirements into sub-system and piece part requirements, and generate verification criteria and plans for the requirements.
Mentor product development teams in the use of applicable processes and tools.
Develop tests and data analysis to troubleshoot system problems or performance issues.
Develop and conduct test plans and procedures; verify results of laboratory and flight tests in support of FAA certification.
Participate in cross-functional team efforts in integration, pre- qualification and qualification for products and sub-systems of moderate to high complexity.
Estimate, track and report status relating to technical performance, cost, schedule and risk for assigned scope of work as well as for overall systems team performance.
Review metrics and defect trends, identify systemic root causes and process improvements and recommend new approaches, tools and techniques that drive continuous improvement in systems development processes.
Perform analysis at all levels of the total system product including concept, design, fabrication, modeling, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal.
Perform technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems.
Manage configuration process, perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
Ensure the logical and systematic conversion of product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
Establish strategy for requirements management, reliability, logistics, coordination of different teams, evaluation measurements, and other disciplines for large or complex projects.
Ensure that all likely aspects of a system are considered and integrated into a whole.
Basic Qualifications:
Candidates for this role should possess a Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced degree and 7 years of prior relevant experience
In absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience is required
A Collins Principal Engineer is Expected to:
Demonstrate the ability to come up with innovative approaches to projects and issues
Demonstrate the soft skills required for motivating others and fostering collaboration
Have a proven track record of being able to effectively handle engineering discussions at all levels of the organization
Tackle the most difficult issues head on and work them through until conclusion
Identify blind spots within project development and help address these gaps to ensure project success
Be a recognized Subject Matter Expert (SME) and perform as such in technical reviews
Serve as technical interface to executive leadership and our customers
Effectively work with vague or little guidance
Handle the "tough questions" from peers and leadership in all situations
Imparte change even when not assigned direct authority
Mentor and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers
Identify skill gaps in order to build highly effective teams
The Successful Candidate Should:
Be an expert in systems engineering and open systems architectures
Be experienced in proposal strategy and proposal writing
Have experience with aircraft level system integration
Have a broad and deep background in Avionics computing programs, products, and underlying technologies
Be experienced in avionics system architecture development, and systems, software, and hardware engineering.
Be knowledgeable of and have experience with Avionics regulatory and certification requirements: TSO, DO-160, DO254, DO178B/C, and ARP4754.
Be willing and able to travel both within the USA and internationally.
