Raytheon Technologies NWS Inuit Training and Development Program (ITDP) Safety Officer Trainee in Ottawa, Ontario
The North Warning System (NWS) is a joint Canada and United States radar system that includes 47 sites spanning the Arctic from Labrador to the Alaskan border. The NWS provides the capability to detect airborne threats across North America’s polar region, providing a command and control capability to the Canadian Air Defence Sector (CADS) of the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD).
Raytheon provides Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services for the NWS including full care, custody, and control of the entire system and its components. This includes the radar sites, five logistics support sites (LSSs), a monitoring and control center, and a repair depot. Key activities include maintenance and repair of radar and electronic systems, power generation, and facilities; logistics support; and remote monitoring and control.
Raytheon Canada Limited (RCL) implements an Inuit Training and Development Program (ITDP) that benefits communities within the Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement (CLCA). The purpose of the program is to actively recruit, develop, and train Inuit Beneficiaries (IBs) for employment on the NWS Program and foster employee-retention and skills development for Inuit Beneficiary employees at all levels.
Raytheon seeks an Inuit Beneficiary in the Trainee Program as a Safety Officer Trainee. This program provides opportunities to gain hands on working experience on the NWS while developing critical skill sets necessary for their careers. This program does not require a diploma or a high school education and is available to all unskilled individuals in the CLCA communities. Individuals are placed into a variety of roles on the NWS and assigned a mentor to aid in their overall development with on the job training (OJT) as a primary focus.
Responsibilities of this position may include, but are not limited to: • Reporting and following up on environmental incidents. • Researching and responding to environmental related questions. • Drafting environmental impact assessments. • Maintaining a Material Safety Data Sheet database. • Aiding in the preparation of pre and post-season plans and reports. • Reviewing and updating environmental plans, policies, and procedures. • Willingness to become familiar with the operation and maintenance of an advanced water treatment system in accordance with applicable regulations. • Ensuring proper sampling, transport, and handling of soil and water samples as well as ensuring proper chain of custody documentation is being maintained. • Responding to environmental releases.
Requirements: • Individuals must be enrolled in a post-secondary program in an environmental or environmental related field. The successful candidate must be able to provide documentation proving they possess the required educational background & relevant experience. • Able to provide proof of Inuit registry.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Experience: • Knowledge and/or training in erosion and sediment control. • Knowledge of surface and groundwater management. • Proven report writing skills and experience. • Training in water and soil sampling techniques while maintaining chain of custody records. • Cultural awareness and sensitivity with an understanding of work in the Canadian Arctic. • Successful candidates will be required to complete a criminal reference check and pass a security clearance check • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software • Experience with ISO 9001 and 14001 standards
