The Energetics and Propulsion department within the Mechanical Products Team (MPT) is seeking a Mechanical Engineer at our Sacramento site that is responsible for propulsion modeling, design, and performance simulation. You will work with both internal and external customers to cooperatively develop future business opportunities and position RMD for future propulsion and missile system growth. You will support development of rocket propulsion preliminary system designs and perform propulsion system analyses to meet customer requirements. You should have experience in the design and testing of a variety of propulsion configurations including tactical and strategic propulsion systems.
This position may also provide engineering support and subcontractor technical oversite for propulsion system production, design, and process improvements as a Responsible Engineering Authority (REA). Additional duties may include responsibility for requirements pertaining to environmental loading and flow down to mechanical sub-systems, supporting the design phase enabling early cycles of learning, establishing critical design elements and processes, supporting the delivery of the Tech Data Package (TDP), influence integration &qualification plans and model correlation, and maintain the design integrity during the production sustainment lifecycle.
Responsibilities to Anticipate:
Meet with customers as required to foster and establish future business relationships, and support Requests for Information (RFI’s) and proposals, as required.
Conduct propulsion system sizing, mass estimation, trajectory simulation, and performance analyses
Develop preliminary system designs and analyses that involve the use of a variety of system sizing, performance, and mission fly-out analytical tools
Will develop propulsion system concepts, apply basic engineering equations, develop inputs for and run existing codes, assess and correlate code output
Develop solutions to a variety of complex problems using various performance modeling techniques, established precedents, and policies for guidance.
May direct, coordinate, and review the work of a small staff of cross-functional engineers
You will focus on both in-house and supplier’s design and analysis of components related to missiles systems.
You will support diverse teams, providing technical oversight to a team often comprised of cross functional disciplines, leveraging their network of Subject Matter Experts.
The work is performed with limited direction either individually, in a team environment, or in a supervisory capacity.
This position can be a Mechanical Engineer II (P2) or a Sr. Mechanical Engineer (P3), based on the candidate's qualifications as they relate to the skills, experience and responsibility requirements for the position
An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experience as follows: Master’s is equal to 2 years of experience or a Ph.D. is equal to 4 years of experience.
Qualifications You Must Have:
Bachelor’s in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM)
For a Mechanical Engineer II: Minimum of two (2) years of experience in propulsion system performance analysis
For a Sr. Mechanical Engineer I: Minimum of five (5) years of experience in propulsion system performance analysis
Capability to understand and execute complex analytical computer codes is required.
Rocket propulsion industry technical experience and/or relevant coursework is required
The ability to obtain and maintain a US security clearance prior to the start date. U.S. citizenship is required as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance
Qualifications We Value :
Minimum of six (6) years of experience in the performance analysis of propulsion systems
Expertise in: Conceptual, developmental, and production design phases
Capability to understand and execute complex analytical computer codes such as MatLab, C++, FORTRAN, OTIS, and/or Python is desired
Ability to p rovide technical oversight to propulsion subcontractor(s) to define system requirements and work with them to ensure on time, on budget delivery of compliant hardware and documentation.
Develop and deliver technical presentations to management and government agencies.
Work effectively in a distributed collaborative environment with program management and other technical experts.
Experience with and presenting to FRB, ERB, CCB, MRB, PCB, PMAB, etc.
Effective interpersonal, communication and networking skills, ability to work well with others including customers and suppliers
Motivated self-starter with strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment
Ability to work in a team environment with timely problem resolution utilizing a professional, positive, proactive attitude, strong customer focus, and a desire to help others
Ability to recognize roadblocks/issues and elevate/suggest appropriate corrective action
Existing DoD clearance preferred
