Senior Systems Engineer - Computer Vision & Perception
Our Mission Systems Flight Control and Navigation group, located in Sterling Virginia, advances embedded Guidance Navigation, Control and Perception systems for a wide variety of military and commercial customers across the world. This means we are responsible for primary guidance, flight control and navigation on a variety of UAS platforms. It also means you get to bring perception, estimation and control expertise to a variety of products/applications across Collins aerospace (Navigation for Ground/Air/Sea, Certified Avionics Systems, Inertial Navigation Systems). As part of a highly dynamic team of engineers, you will be asked to apply your knowledge in the following areas to a variety of products/applications that are relevant to both military and commercial industries:
Classical Computer Vision Theory as it pertains to Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM) and concepts around Multiple View Geometry.
Machine Learning and AI Methods for object recognition, tracking in 2D EO/IR imagery as well as RF signal classification.
Sensor Modeling (cameras, optical systems, inertial sensors).
Navigation/PNT (inertial sensors, air data sensors, GPS/RF navigation aids).
This role requires a focus on innovation & strong execution, as well as a deep theoretical understanding of computer vision concepts and navigation theory. The ideal candidate will have an advanced degree in a relevant STEM field and enjoy collaborating with a highly dynamic team of their peers.
Responsible for the development, prototyping, and verification of advanced algorithms that address current challenges faced in the areas of using computer vision to solve absolute and relative navigation problems.
Support strategic Science and Technology (S&T) Program Pursuits.
Support development of Technical Roadmaps.
Proficient in leading small teams of Engineers (Algorithm, Systems, Software, Hardware, Test) to quickly prove out advanced GNC concepts.
Comfortable working in an environment that encourages “first principles” solutions to complex and challenging physics problems.
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate discipline and 5 years of relevant experience or an Advanced degree in the appropriate discipline and 3 years of relevant experience. In the absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience is required.
A strong theoretical background in one or more of the following areas is required:
Computer Vision - Pose estimation and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (LIDAR, RADAR, Camera, IMU, etc)
System dynamics and State Estimation (linear/nonlinear, navigation/PNT, inertial/air-data/oscillator modeling)
Empathy, curiosity, and desire to constantly improve, acquire new skills and drive for results.
Experience in developing system level solutions that integrate multiple systems into a single offering is also desired.
Passion for technology, business, market trends and, most specifically, adding value to the industry.
Possesses strong strategic, critical, and problem-solving thinking
Strong interpersonal skills
Expertise in innovation & the ability to think strategically about how to advance business-led solutions
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Must have or be capable of obtaining a US Department of Defense (DoD) security clearance. Candidates selected will be subject to a government security investigation/reinstatement and must meet eligibility requirements.
An ideal candidate would also be proficient in some/all of the following areas:
Machine Learning and AI concepts applied to perception systems, path planning, and decision making
Statistical error modeling, error propagation, and hypothesis testing
Linear algebra, least squares, matrix decompositions/transforms
Convex nonlinear optimization
Rigid body coordinate transforms
Model calibration/validation with empirical data
