The Scientist II will provide significant contributions to novel concepts in directed energy (DE) applications, focusing on concepts and principles of particle accelerator technology design, prototyping, testing, and manufacturing, to pioneer, demonstrate, simulate and test the performance and impacts of novel designs for national defense applications.
The successful candidate will develop novel approaches and proposed solutions to meet overall program and device performance objectives.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated successful experience in the physics and technology of particle accelerator and particle beam systems, and nuclear physics.
Experience in plasma physics is a plus. The Scientist II will be expected to provide modeling, simulation and analysis, and develop designs, test prototypes, and interact across various departments to lead the integration of components and subsystems into larger DE systems.
The Scientist II will write and develop proposals for Raytheon innovations in particle accelerator technologies and provide project leadership for specific efforts through frequent interaction and coordination with customers, principle investigators, scientists, project leaders, engineers, and technical support personnel. An effective candidate will guide the work of Scientists I, Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Technician positions associated with DE projects and programs. This is a full-time position.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position needs an active U.S. Security Clearance as of day one of employment.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
Work and collaborate with staff to develop designs, simulation and analysis as applied to directed energy concepts, components, sub-systems, and systems.
Lead the effort to develop models and perform simulations to predict system performance for comparison with project requirements.
Collaborate with project personnel to design prototypes and optimize the fabrication, integration, and commissioning the DE hardware:
injectors, beamlines, high power microwave systems, accelerators, targets, and beam diagnostics.
Based on theoretical designs and simulations, assist with developing component, subsystem, and system mechanical requirements and designs by working with scientists, engineers, and designers/draftspersons.
Assist with troubleshooting and maintenance of particle accelerator prototypes on test stands while mentoring mechanical, electrical, and software engineers the basics of operation of accelerator hardware.
Document prototype specifications and procedures to support engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
MSc or PhD in Physics with a focus on accelerator technology.
Minimum of eight (8) years of experience comprised from any combination of work, academic or scientific research involving physics, nuclear physics, and/or radiation-producing devices / detectors
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in physics and technology of particle accelerators.
Minimum of four (4) years of experience in designing and optimizing particle accelerator components and interfacing with engineering on the mechanical design and fabrication of accelerator devices.
Industrial experience is a plus.
Experience with experimental physics, data acquisition, and signal processing.
Experience with power electronics, and pulsed power systems.
Experience with monitoring, shielding, and/or safety aspect of working with ionizing radiation.
U.S. Citizenship is required
Ph.D. in Physics with a focus in accelerator technology
Six years of demonstrated experience relevant to accelerator technologies which may include electron sources, particle accelerators, high voltage, pulsed power, high power radio frequency sources and applications, particle beam and radiation diagnostic instrumentation, and vacuum systems.
Experience in one or more of the following:
radiofrequency systems and instrumentation, high power microwave systems, pulsed power and high voltage, data acquisition and analysis, and radiation environments.
Experience in the design, troubleshooting, and/or safety of high voltage systems.
Three years or more experience in physics-based modeling, simulation, and analysis of conceptual and prototype systems.
Proven ability to use commercially available software for simulation of physical processes in particle accelerators.
Experience with particle-in-cell simulation codes.
Such experience may include one or more of the following commercial software packages:
LSP, ICEPIC, MAGIC, CHICAGO.
Experience with radiation transport codes such as MCNP or ITS.
Experience with one or more of the following program languages:
Python, MatLab, Mathematica, Maple.
Familiarity with Los Alamos Accelerator Code Group (LAACG) design codes, e.g. POISSON, SuperFISH, PARMELA, TRACE, PARMTEQ.
Ability to work in an interdisciplinary team setting.
Ability to cooperate and communicate well with project management, engineering, and procurement groups.
Ability to work independently with little to no supervision while maintaining a high level of efficiency.
Ability to thrive in a challenging and dynamic environment.
Must be flexible and quick to adapt to sudden changes and issues.
