Raytheon Missiles & Defense Directed Energy Group is part of Raytheon Technologies Advanced Technologies (AT) product line, providing comprehensive, end-to-end HPM system solutions for various customers throughout the Department of Defense.
Raytheon’s Directed Energy Group consists of highly motivated, ambitious individuals with expertise in the areas of prime power engineering, pulsed power design & engineering, High Power Electromagnetic source design & engineering, novel antenna design & engineering, and diagnostics and effects testing. The Directed Energy Group reaches through and collaborates with numerous groups throughout Raytheon Technologies, collaborating with flight test and satellite systems support and tracking, large facility operations, maintenance, and engineering, sensor development and diagnostics; control and data acquisition systems, software and automation, materials fabrication, assembly, processing and coating, quality engineering, and document production, imaging and management.
The HPM Systems Mechanical Engineer position’s primary duty will be to leverage their knowledge of HPM (High Power Microwave) system architecture and best design principles and practices to work closely with Raytheon Scientists to develop manufacturable models of all subsystems and components of HPM systems.
In addition, the Mechanical Engineer’s duties will also include participation in all aspects of the design process of HPM Systems for Raytheon Technologies’ various customers.
Additional duties will include participation in mechanical engineering subgroups in project teams, active participation in pulsed power and microwave system design groups in development processes and efforts to include: technical report preparation, preparation of materials, content, and products for system design reviews, delivering presentations to customers, and participation in technical proposal development.
The candidate will also work with other key project team members to determine, guide, and build to optimal design parameters to meet HPM system key performance parameters.
The primary work location will be on-site at the Raytheon Tucson office; some travel will be required to meet and work with vendors and to support testing and other activities as needed.
U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position requires either an active U.S. Security Clearance or the ability to obtain one.
Required Skills, Qualifications & Education:
Six (6) years of experience with HPM (High Power Microwave) Systems.
Experience of key design considerations for at least two of the following:
Mechanical Designs of HPM Sources
Mechanical Designs of HPM Antennas
Mechanical Designs of RF (Radio Frequency) Accelerator Systems
Mechanical Designs of Pulsed Power Systems, with minimum voltage and current ratings of 500kV and 5kA, respectively.
Bachelors of Science in Mechanical or Electro/Mechanical or Aerospace or related.
US Citizenship Required
Desired Skills, Qualifications & Education:
Eight (8) years of demonstrated experience in the development of advanced technologies.
Experience and/or knowledge of at least two of following considerations in materials selection for HPM or Accelerator Systems:
Off-gassing
Grain structure
System vacuum rating
Sealing between joined components held under vacuum
Material breakdown thresholds
Triple points
Experience and/or knowledge of the following considerations in system design considerations for general aspects of HPM or Accelerator Systems:
Trigger design considerations, to include choice of insulating media
Minimization of triple points
Pulse Forming Lines
Minimization of systems held under vacuum
Tradeoffs between pressurized vs. vacuum rated sections in HPM subsystems
Two years of experience working with small and highly motivated teams in design, development, and fabrication of advanced technologies
Strong history of patents related to HPM system designs.
Demonstrated competency and understanding of basic principles of program management.
Familiarity with some or all of the following software suites: Solidworks, PTC Creo, HFSS, CST Studio Suite.
Active Secret/Top Secret Clearance.
Master’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering, OR a Bachelor’s of Science in Mechanical Engineering with a Master’s of Science in
of the following: Electrical Engineering, Mathematics (Pure or Applied), or Physics.
