Collins Aerospace is searching for a lead for our System Architect Group within Civil Space and Sea Solutions. The System Architect Lead will officially establish the group, transitioning experienced talent in the organization from current roles and will be responsible for both functional development of the team as well as serving as the senior technical authority for review, evaluation and technical assessment of both current and future programs.

The successful candidate will be empowered to guide and direct engineering initiatives for new business efforts, product design, development and mission support. The System Architects work in concert with the L4 Program Chief Engineers to develop solutions that best meet the needs of our customers. Additionally, t he System Architect lead coordinates with the Program Chief Engineer so ensure System Architect resources support the needs of the value stream, and also engages with the Systems lead for the program.

Primary Responsibilities :

  • Lead engineering analysis and anomaly reviews via comprehensive fault tree analysis, as well as support formal program and proposal reviews from a systems architecture perspective

  • Review the design and architecture for CSSS programs, ensuring completeness, accuracy and adherence to established Collins systems engineering processes and technical standards/procedures

  • Participate in the development of program requirements and specifications for various systems through multiple program phases as part of the development process

  • Champion and drive MBSE throughout the CSSS org

  • Support new business capture, including developing systems architecture concepts, engaging in meetings with potential customers to discuss needs and capabilities, conducting pre-proposal analysis, proposal development, and mission and system analysis

  • Support and/or lead Non-Advocate Reviews and system design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR). Support specification and interface development, testing, problem resolution and customer interactions

  • Support Engineering Review Boards (ERBs), Corrective Action Boards (CABs) and Failure Review Boards (FRBs), as required

  • Support design/development to ensure that customer & internal goals for safety, mission success, and performance are met at the system level

  • Identify risks and associated system impacts, providing recommendations on level of acceptable risk and associated rationale. Develop mitigation strategies where prudent

  • Identify technical issues, propose solution options, and follow through to resolve the issues with minimal supervision and approval of the Level 4 Program Chief Engineer

  • Identify opportunities for improvement based upon review of anomaly and failure data; and support development/implementation of system design improvements

  • Interface with internal and external customers and associates in engineering, assembly, integration and test, safety and mission assurance, and program management

  • Set and exhibit high standards for integrity, quality, and safety in every action; foster engagement for technical excellence as technical leader.

  • Contribute to and/or maintain technology roadmaps

Basic Qualifications:

  • Must be a US Citizen

  • Bachelor’s degree and 12 years of prior relevant experience OR • Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 10 years experience OR • In absence of a degree, 16 years of relevant experience is required • Engineering/Other Technical Positions: Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations

  • Demonstrated ability to lead and coach personnel

  • Experience leading system design efforts, including detailed requirement flow-down, system architecture and ConOps development

  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical background with a very good understanding of active thermal control, power management and distribution, and environmental control and life support systems (ECLSS), including regenerative ECLSS

  • Experience leading tiger-team investigations for anomaly resolution and corrective action

  • Ability to read and interpret Engineering drawings/schematics

  • Ability to review presentations, emails, white papers, trade studies, vendor analyses and reports for content and accuracy

  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams, internal and external customers

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, technical writing experience

  • Ability to communicate complex technical subjects with clarity and precision

  • Supports the Strategic Value Stream Lead’s change management process with impact assessments, trade studies, and assertions as it pertains to the Value Stream

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Systems or Aerospace Engineering or a related Engineering field

  • 15 years of experience in mission design, space or ground systems design, development, manufacture, test or operations, including 10 years of functional or project team leadership positions is preferred

  • Space system/mission analysis and design (full mission-life-cycle experience)

  • Significant knowledge of safety and reliability engineering principles for manned spacecraft

  • Experience with reliability analyses and verification, including reliability predictions, FMECA (failure mode, effects, and criticality analysis), and expertise in fault tree analysis

  • Analytical thinker with a demonstrated ability for solving complex problems and a bias for action
